Hot; Monotonous; Not Much Else to Say

Today was empty of any of the interesting, unique and otherwise notable things that make these motorcycle trips special.

To sum it up, we rode in very sunny, very hot weather from one place to another.

We started in Beaumont, Texas, took back roads to Houston and then got on I-10 for a 200 mile, 95-100 degree run to San Antonio.  Monday consisted of 310 miles of driving, a word not complimentary to motorcycle travel.

So, lets talk about the past few days instead.

So far Biking Bad 2014 is five days old.  We have ridden in four states - Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

We have covered over 1300 miles, averaging about 260 miles per day.  That's not a particularly big number.  On most trips the average is between 325 - 350 miles per day.

The food has been excellent.  We were surprised by excellent roadside barbecue near Jackson, Tennessee, feasted on world class chicken and superb hot tamales in Mississippi.  In Louisiana we ate lots of crawfish, shrimp and gumbo.  As usual, we have put away a lot of pork in its many breakfast varieties.

We've been to the Crossroads and to Erath, Louisiana.  We had a great time touring Bayou Boeuf (mistakenly identified previously as Bayou Lafourche) with Moe.  And the chat with Max is something to remember.

The riding has been fun, but as of yet nothing special.  Most of the roads we have been on are flat and fairly straight.  We expect another hot day of interstate travel to get through Texas and then we will be closer to New Mexico.  The riding and the scenery should be really good, particularly in the northern parts of the state.

Back to the present.  We had a nice Texas steak dinner on the Riverwalk in San Antonio.  The Riverwalk was full of people and most restaurants were jammed.

On Tuesday we plan another day on I-10.  We should probably end up in Fort Stockton, Texas, for the night.  On Wednesday we will enter New Mexico near Carlsbad.  We are looking forward to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and, just a few miles up the road, the UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico.
